Student Initiatives in
Sustainable Agriculture
The Student Initiatives in
Sustainable Agriculture Conference (SISA) is a national event for current
and recent college
students dedicated to sustainable gardening and farming initiatives whether
well established or not yet realized. SISA facilitates an
exchange of knowledge between students involved in and interested in
sustainable agriculture
projects at colleges and universities throughout the United States. The goal
of this exchange is to promote the growth of student-run projects and encourage continued involvement in sustainable agriculture after college.
The Student Initiatives in
Sustainable Agriculture Conference (SISA) was developed in response to a
lack of opportunities for student farmers to come together and discuss their
projects and ideas. The first conference in 2011 brought together students
from 30 colleges and universities in 7 states. In 2012, we are expanding the
SISA Conference to a national level while also expanding our purpose to
include other young people involved in, or interested in becoming involved
in sustainable agriculture.
Our nation is faced with an aging population of farmers. The SISA Conference
is one piece of a larger movement to encourage a new generation of farmers.
Students involved in student-run farms and gardens are becoming equipped
with both the tools needed to succeed in our modern world and the skills and
determination necessary to succeed in agriculture.
